Grade 9 Science Experiment 3 - How to Create your own Elevator using Physics
The purpose of this science fair project is to demonstrate how physics can be used to change the direction of forces. Elevators can utilize the force of gravity by lowering you closer to the center of the Earth. However, elevators can also directly oppose gravity by raising an elevator car. In this science fair project you will create an elevator using the principles of Physics regarding a pulley and weight system. Weights should maintain a constant tension in the line.
An elevator can be constructed using a pulley and weight system. The difference between the weight of the elevator car and the counterweight affects the speed and safety of the elevator.
1. Weight of the counterweight piece of clay
2. Length of string
3. Placement of coffee cans
- Two metal coffee cans
- Small cardboard box that represents an elevator car
- Modeling clay to be used as a counterweight to the elevator car. Therefore, the piece of modeling clay should be similar weight to the elevator car.
- Rubber band
- Wooden board that is 2ft by 1ft (You can modify the size of the wooden board.)
