Grade 9 Science Experiment 19 - Photosynthesis - How Plants use the Weather Elements to Feed Themselves
The purpose of this science fair project is to understand how plants use the process of photosynthesis to feed themselves. Green plants have the ability to capture light and store it as chemical energy in the food they produce. This food manufacturing process is referred to as "photosynthesis". Essentially, the captured light contains carbon dioxide and water that is converted into food and oxygen for the plant. The oxygen plants produce is a major benefit for us as it allows us to breath in our earth environment.
This science fair project will test to see how light plays an integral in photosynthesis. We will determine whether there is starch in the leaf tissue. The starch is considered food in the leaf tissue.
The leaves exposed to light will have more starch in their leaf tissue than the leaves that were not exposed to light.
- Leaves that completely, partially, or not exposed to light
- The amount of starch present on each leaf
- Geranium plant
- Potassium Iodide crystals
- Safety Goggles
- Paper clips
- Black paper
- Two Beakers
- One small beaker
- Boiling water
- Hot alcohol
