Grade 9 Science Experiment 18 - Explore the Law of Magnetism
The purpose of this science fair project is show how forces on the earth create magnetism through a series of magnetic demonstrations. The definition of magnetism is the following: "A class of physical phenomena that include the attraction for iron observed in lodestone and a magnet, are inseparably associated with moving electricity, are exhibited by both magnets and electric currents, and are characterized by fields of force (www.dictionary.com)."
A magnet has a north pole and south pole. Similar magnetic poles will repel each other while opposite magnetic poles will attract. Magnets have the strongest force at their poles. It is important to note that the magnetic poles of earth are not located at the poles as viewed on a map. They are instead at an angle from the pole. Perception of this angle depends on the location in which you reside on the earth.
The laws of magnetism will be tested. A metallic object can be magnetized. A magnetic force field exists in our environment.
